Data Reload

by 5uso

Data Reload lets a Fabric player or server owner reload datapacks in a running world, and it reports datapack load errors in chat.

FabricClient or server, optionalMIT LicenseOpen source1.17.1 – 1.21.1

What it does

Data Reload is a developer aid for building datapacks. Pressing F3 with Y reloads the datapacks without restarting the game, so changes to functions, loot tables, recipes and item modifiers can be tested quickly. On a server, the mod sends the problems it finds during a reload to the chat, so a datapack author can see what failed without reading the console.

Load problems are grouped by kind, covering functions, JSON parsing, loot tables, item modifiers, recipes and invalid paths. In singleplayer the messages appear in chat during play. Operators also receive them even when they do not have the mod installed, which covers players who run a server without a client copy. The mod is intended for datapack development rather than for everyday play.

The mod runs on Fabric only, with files for 1.17.1 – 1.21.1 across 10 release versions, the latest being 1.7 for 1.21.1. Either side can run it and neither needs it. It is released under the MIT License and is open source; its source code and issue tracker are public.

Key features

  1. Datapack reload shortcut

Pressing F3 with Y reloads all datapacks in the running game, so edits take effect without a restart.

  2. Chat error reports

Errors found during a reload appear in chat in singleplayer, so the author sees each failing file directly.

  3. Server error reports

Problems found while reloading server datapacks are sent to the chat, and operators receive them whether or not they have the mod.

  4. Error categories

Messages cover function, JSON parse, loot table, item modifier, recipe and invalid path errors.

How it compares

Full comparison

Data Reload is a Fabric-only utility for datapack development, with a client or server optional environment and MIT License. dmsafai is also Fabric, but it is built for 1.20.1 and licensed under the Apache License 2.0. Suppress OpenGL Error 128(0-2) is a client-side only tool for Fabric and Forge, covering 1.18.2 – 1.21.8 under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, so it does not reload datapacks at all.
