[CMT] Custom Mob Targets (Muddy Port)
by MuddyMonkey
[CMT] Custom Mob Targets is a Forge mod that lets server owners set which mobs attack which other living entities through JSON files.
What it does
Each rule names an attacking mob and the target it should pursue, so creepers can go after sheep, zombies after skeletons, and skeletons after cows or chickens. Targets can be vanilla or modded entities, including players and passive mobs, and any entity is referenced by its registry ID, such as twilightforest:naga or alexsmobs:grizzly_bear. Rules can make mobs target players, and passive mobs given a melee or ranged attack become able to attack.
Every rule lives in a JSON file. Several config files can be used, and the mod loads every file placed in its CustomMobTargets config folder apart from those whose names begin with a set prefix. Running the cmt reload command applies edits without restarting the server. The mod has no dependencies, and without any configuration it changes nothing. A commented example file shows how to set a target.
The mod is published for Forge 1.20.1 as version 20.1.0, released 2026-03-09, and is released under the MIT License, but it is not open source. It needs to be installed on the server, while players may leave it out. A single-player world can run it as well.
Key features
Mob versus mob targeting
Any attacking mob can be set to pursue a chosen target mob, for example creepers against sheep or zombies against skeletons.
Melee and ranged attacks
Passive mobs can be given a melee attack, and ranged attacks support ten projectile types, including arrows, fireballs, wither skulls and shulker bullets.
Configurable damage
Melee damage and the damage of each arrow-type attack can be set separately in the config files.
Modded entity support
Modded mobs work through their registry IDs, so a rule can name a mod's entity directly.
Hot reload
The cmt reload command applies config changes while the server keeps running.
Compatibility
Latest build for each game version and loader.
Only full game releases are shown. This mod publishes no snapshot builds.
How it compares
No Skeletons is server-side only, published for Forge 1.20.1 and released under All rights reserved, so it is not open source. Balanced Skeleton is a Forge mod for 1.20.1 that both the server and every player need, and it is also under All rights reserved. Keep The Kids Safe! runs on client and server under the MIT License and is open source, but it has to be installed on both sides.

What the author says
This is a port of the original 1.12.2 CMT mod by ZeithComms (and me). A lightweight, server-side mod that lets modpack makers and server owners configure any mob to target and attack any other living entity — including players, passive mobs, and modded entities.
