Cull Display Entities

by JustAlittleWolf

Cull Display Entities makes the game skip drawing display entities that the player cannot see, which reduces the work the client does on those entities.

What it does

Minecraft already applies frustum culling, which hides objects that fall outside the camera view. Display entities, such as block displays, use a bounding box that the default culling does not handle well, so they can be drawn even when they sit behind the camera. This mod forces display entities to be culled using visibility bounding boxes, and it fixes the calculation of the bounding box for display entities that have no width and height set.

The game leaves the culling optimization for block display entities disabled by default, and most servers do not set the properties that would enable it, so players would not get the benefit on their own. The mod tags the common display entity types so the culling applies to them. Its main gain is on worlds and servers with many display entities, where the client spends time on entities that are not visible. In some cases block display entities were culled incorrectly and their models appeared too large; the mod addresses that case as well.

Cull Display Entities is a client-side only mod for Fabric, published for 26.2 and 26.3, with the latest file 1.3.0 for 26.3. It is open source under the MIT License, and its source code and issue tracker are public.

Key features

  1. Forced display entity culling

Display entities are culled even when default settings would leave them drawn, cutting work on hidden entities.

  2. Visibility bounding boxes

The mod supplies visibility bounding boxes for display entities, so the culling check has a valid volume to test.

  3. Bounding box fix

Block display entities without a configured width and height get a corrected bounding box, avoiding wrongly culled or oversized models.

  4. Common display entity tags

Common display entity types are tagged so the culling logic covers them without manual setup.
