Cubing's Motion Blur

by cubingdragon

Cubing's Motion Blur adds a screen blur that smears fast movement, using frame blending and rotation-projection matrices on the Fabric loader.

What it does

The mod blends several recent frames together so that quick camera turns and movement leave a soft trail instead of sharp jumps. Its author describes the method as an attempt at the highest quality motion blur, built on rotation-projection matrices that produce noticeably smoother motion. The strength of the blur and the number of samples taken per frame can be adjusted, trading visual smoothness against the work done each frame.

Blur can also be applied to entities, so moving mobs and players show the same smearing as the scene around them. The mod runs on the client alone, and only the client needs it; servers do not have to install anything. It requires Fabric Loader and Fabric API on Minecraft 1.21.11, and files exist for 1.21.10 and 1.21.11.

The mod is resource intensive, mainly when a player first joins a world, and frame times typically stabilize after a few minutes. It is released under the MIT License but is not open source.

Key features

  1. Frame blending

Recent frames are combined so fast movement leaves a soft, continuous trail on screen.

  2. Rotation-projection matrices

The blur is computed with rotation-projection matrices, which the author says make motion significantly smoother.

  3. Adjustable strength and samples

Blur strength and the number of samples taken can be changed to set the look and the cost of the effect.

  4. Entity blur

Moving entities receive the blur as well as the surrounding scene, not only the camera view.

What the author says

This is a motion blur mod that aims to be the best looking blur in the entire game. Instead of using simple methods like estimating the blur from two static frame images, it reconstructs each pixel's actual on-screen motion using the depth buffer and the camera's rotation/projection matrices. It is only client side…
