The Creeping Nether

by Electravirus

The Creeping Nether is a Forge magic mod in which a Nether corruption spreads from a portal across the overworld, turning blocks, plants and mobs into Nether-type versions of themselves.

ForgeClient and serverCreative Commons Attribution Non Commercial 4.01.12 – 1.12.2

What it does

Once a Nether portal is built, corruption begins to spread slowly over the surrounding land, leaving a scorched landscape behind. Stone and dirt become Netherrack, sand becomes Soul Sand that can grow Nether Wart, cobblestone turns into a new block called Blood Stone, and trees burn into charred wood that drops charcoal. Mobs can spawn from the Nether side, and the corruption occasionally strikes with lightning that transforms the creatures it touches. Villagers become witches, pigs become zombie pigmen and slimes become magma cubes, while cows and sheep react badly to the unstable energy.

Corruption can be limited in how far it reaches, and breaking the portal halts its spread. Nether essence is mined from Nether ores in the overworld and works on corrupted blocks much like a portal does. Once washed with a Ghast tear it becomes purified and can cleanse Nether blocks and Hallow blocks. Catalysts are crafted from dragon breath and a charged soulstone or hallowstone, and the effects grow over time as the surrounding blocks are charged. The default configuration includes support for Biomes O' Plenty, and more options control which blocks the corruption turns into.

Every player and the server need a copy of the mod. It is published for Forge only, for Minecraft 1.12.2, and is released under the Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial 4.0 license, which means it is not open source. The source code is public. Files were first published and last updated on 2024-09-23, and the latest file is 2.2.2 for 1.12.2.

Key features

  1. Nether corruption

A built portal starts a slow spread that turns the surrounding land into a scorched Nether landscape.

  2. Block conversion

Stone, dirt, sand, cobblestone and trees each change into a Nether-themed block, with Blood Stone as a new result.

  3. Mob transformation

Lightning strikes from the corruption change nearby mobs, such as villagers into witches and pigs into zombie pigmen.

  4. Nether essence and purification

Essence mined from Nether ores is washed with a Ghast tear to purify it, then used to cleanse corrupted blocks.

  5. Catalysts and charged stones

Catalysts crafted from dragon breath and charged soulstone or hallowstone grow their effect as the blocks around them are charged.

What the author says

When you build a nether portal, it will begin to slowly corrupt the land until all that is left is a scorched hellscape. There is a limit to how far the corruption can spread however, and the corruption can be halted by breaking the portal. Stone and dirt will turn to Netherrack. Sand will turn to Soul Sand and grow…
