Collision Damage

by fonnymunkey

Collision Damage reworks how a player takes harm from hitting a block at speed, applying damage based on sudden negative acceleration.

ForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.12.2

What it does

Normally Minecraft only lets a player who is wearing an Elytra take damage from flying into a wall. This Forge mod extends that behavior to every player: a sudden drop in speed when striking a block is converted into damage. Two config values set when the damage starts, the speed threshold above which a hit begins to hurt, and a multiplier that scales the damage beyond that point.

An optional toggle routes the collision damage through the fall damage system instead, so enchantments and effects that reduce fall damage, such as Feather Falling, also reduce collision damage. The toggle is off by default. The mod is intended to pair with movement and mobility mods such as grappling hook and dodge mods, and with high-speed effects from enchantments and potions. It runs on client and server, so the server and every player need it, and it is published for Forge 1.12.2 only, with version 1.2.2 as the latest file from 2023-03-17. Source code and the issue tracker are public, and the mod is open source under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Acceleration-based damage

Damage is calculated from the sudden negative acceleration a player experiences when hitting a block.

  2. Adjustable threshold

A config option sets how fast the player must hit a wall before collision damage begins.

  3. Damage multiplier

A second config option scales the damage above the threshold, so server owners can tune severity.

  4. Fall damage mode

An optional toggle applies collision damage through the fall damage path, which lets fall-damage reducers affect it.

Use cases

Pairing with movement mods

Players using grappling hooks or dodge mods at high speed can face collision damage when a fast movement ends in a wall.

Modded speed effects

Enchantments and potions that raise player speed make the collision damage more noticeable.

Who it’s for: Server owners and modpack makers who want speed to carry a real cost in collisions, and players who use fast movement mods on Forge 1.12.2.

Questions

Does Collision Damage need to be installed on the server?

Yes. Installation covers the server and each player's game.

Does Feather Falling reduce collision damage?

Only when the optional fall damage toggle is enabled. The toggle is off by default, so collision damage is separate from fall damage unless it is turned on.

Which Minecraft versions does Collision Damage support?

The mod is published for Forge on Minecraft 1.12.2 only, with version 1.2.2 as the latest file.

What the author says

Fairly simple mod that adds acceleration-based collision damage. Normally this exists in Minecraft, except it only works when the player is wearing an Elytra and they fly into a wall. This mod reworks the calculations and applies it to the player, damaging them when there is a large sudden negative acceleration while…
