Chat Lag Fix

by adryd

Chat Lag Fix is a Fabric client mod that stops Minecraft from freezing for a moment each time a chat message arrives on versions 1.16 and 1.17.

FabricClient-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.16.4 – 1.18.1

What it does

When a player receives a chat message, the game sends an HTTP request to check the sender against the block list. The request is made on the render thread, so the current frame cannot finish until the response returns, which causes a visible lag spike. This mod removes that wait so chat messages come through without stalling rendering while the block list is fetched.

The problem was tied to changes in Mojang's API, which began returning errors for some users, and to migrated Microsoft accounts that had their block list fetched at two-minute intervals. The author documented the cause in a comment with a walkthrough of the technical details. A Mojang employee confirmed the bug was fixed, and the author notes that it still affected 1.16 and 1.17 mainly on the first chat message received.

The mod is published for Fabric only, for the game versions 1.16.4 – 1.18.1. The latest file, mc1.17-2.1.0, targets 1.17.1. The author notes that the fix is no longer needed from 1.18 on, because the issue was resolved in the game itself.

Key features

  1. Chat without render stalls

Chat messages are received without holding the render thread while the block list is requested from Mojang's API.

  2. First-message fix

Targets the lag that appears on the first chat message a player receives after joining a world.

  3. Documented cause

The author explains the request flow and the API errors in a published walkthrough of the technical details.
