Custom Entity Models
by dorianpb
With Custom Entity Models installed, resource packs can replace the models of living entities on Fabric using the JEM and JPM file formats.
What it does
The mod loads .jem and .jpm files from the assets/<namespace>/cem folder inside resource packs, following a format based heavily on the one Optifine uses for custom entity models. Its stated goal is feature parity with Optifine's custom entity models, but it is in alpha and results can vary. Any resource pack for it must be set up for the Optifine CEM layout, and a derivative of such a pack is required to make it work.
Most living entities are supported, while some non-living entities may lack animations. Armor is not supported, and individual part textures and sprites are not supported either. Only the texture and texture size can be set in a .jem file. Custom Entity Models is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, is open source, and runs on the client alone. Files are published for Fabric only, across nine game versions, 1.18 – 1.20, with 0.8.0+1.20 as the latest file for 1.20. YetAnotherConfigLib (YACL) is an optional dependency that adds an option to read from Optifine's folder structure instead of renaming it.
Key features
JEM and JPM model loading
Model and part files are read from resource packs in the same layout that Optifine uses for custom entity models.
Living entity coverage
Most living entities accept custom models, though some non-living entities may not have animations.
Optifine folder option
With the optional YACL dependency installed, a config option makes the mod read Optifine's folder structure directly.
Fabric entrypoint for new entities
Fabric mods that add entities can add CEM support through the cem entrypoint, with net.dorianpb.external as an example.

Use cases
Resource pack authors
Pack makers can ship custom models for living entities, following the Optifine layout as the mod reads it.
Mod developers adding entities
Developers of Fabric mods that introduce new entities can register them with the cem entrypoint to support custom models.
Who it’s for: Resource pack authors and players who use packs built for Optifine's custom entity models on Fabric. Mod developers who add entities to Fabric can also use the cem entrypoint. The mod is in alpha, so packs may not behave exactly as they do under Optifine.
