cbbg ๐ฅฌ
by qb20nh
cbbg, a Fabric mod, reduces visible color banding in Minecraft by rendering the game with higher precision and dithering the final image.
What it does
Frames are computed in RGBA16F, a higher-precision color format, instead of the standard 8-bit output, because the main render target's color attachment is swapped for it. A lightweight full-screen pass then applies STBN blue-noise dithering to break up 8-bit quantization banding, which is where the visible steps in gradients come from. Smooth lighting and GUI background blurring are listed among its effects in the author notes.
cbbg is a client-side Fabric mod that needs Fabric API, so it can be used in single-player and on multiplayer clients without any server-side installation. Servers do not need it installed. Its settings can be changed in Mod Menu through the cbbg config screen, or controlled with chat commands, and the valid values are ENABLED, DISABLED and DEMO. The mod is open source under the MIT License.
Files are published for Fabric only, 1.21.1 โ 26.3 across seven release versions, including 1.21.11, 26.1, 26.2 and 26.3. The latest file is 1.5.0+mc26.3-fabric for 26.3, released on 2026-10-11. Minecraft 26.2 requires Java 25; the launcher can select that runtime automatically, or an instance can be set to Java 25 manually.
Key features
Banding removal
The effect targets the stepped gradients in skies, fog and shaded surfaces that 8-bit output produces.
Blue-noise dithering
STBN noise is applied in a full-screen pass to disguise quantization steps without adding a visible pattern.
Higher-precision rendering
The main render target uses RGBA16F so color is kept at a higher precision before the final output.
In-game configuration
Players can open the cbbg config screen from Mod Menu or change options with chat commands, with ENABLED, DISABLED and DEMO as values.
