Boring Spawn Chunks

by Ennui

Boring Spawn Chunks restores a smaller spawn area for Quilt worlds, so the game keeps only a 3x3 block of chunks loaded around spawn.

QuiltServer-side onlyAll rights reserved1.20.1 – 1.20.4

What it does

Older versions loaded a 19x19 area of chunks at spawn by default, controlled by the spawnChunkRadius game rule. The mod changes that default to a 3x3 area while leaving the rule itself adjustable. Servers that want no spawn chunks at all can set the value to 0.

The mod also updates the world loading screen to a classic square whose size changes with the spawn chunk radius. It is a server-side only mod, so players join without installing it, and the server needs Quilt Loader and Quilt Standard Libraries. Quilted Fabric API (QFAPI) is listed as a required dependency. Files cover 1.20.1, 1.20.2, 1.20.3 and 1.20.4, and the latest, 1.0.1+1.20.4 for 1.20.4, is dated 2024-04-06.

Boring Spawn Chunks is not open source and is released under All rights reserved. Public links exist for the source code and the issue tracker. Boring Default Game Rules is needed to apply the default value of 0. The mod is incompatible with Carpet and Ksyxis.

Key features

  1. Backported spawn radius rule

Adds the spawn chunk radius rule to worlds that predate it, with a newer default.

  2. Smaller default spawn area

The default keeps only a 3x3 block of chunks loaded around spawn instead of the older 19x19 area.

  3. Loading screen update

The world loading screen shows the classic square, and its size changes with the spawn chunk radius.

  4. Full removal option

Setting the rule to 0 removes spawn chunks completely, which requires Boring Default Game Rules to apply that default.

Servers on the supported builds can use the smaller spawn behavior while keeping the game rule adjustable afterward.

Who it’s for: Server owners running Quilt on the supported builds who want a smaller spawn chunk area and can install the required libraries on the server.

Questions

Does Boring Spawn Chunks need to be installed on the client?

No. The mod is server-side only, so players join without installing it, while the server runs Quilt Loader and Quilt Standard Libraries.

Which game versions does Boring Spawn Chunks support?

Files cover 1.20.1, 1.20.2, 1.20.3 and 1.20.4. The latest file, 1.0.1+1.20.4 for 1.20.4, was published on 2024-04-06.

What the author says

Boring Spawn Chunks is a mod that backports the spawnChunkRadius game rule from Minecraft 1.20.5. It not only does that, but also backports the default value so that spawn chunks occupies a 3x3 area instead of a 19x19 one and also backports the visual changes to the world loading screen so that the classic square…
