Book of Familiars

by Fayebeard

Players who want to keep tamed creatures without carrying them around can use Book of Familiars, which adds a Familiar Book item for storing and releasing them.

ForgeNeoForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.20.1 – 26.1.2

What it does

Left-clicking a tamed creature with the Familiar Book in hand stores it inside the book. Stored familiars stay attached to the player's storage even if the book itself is lost, and can be released anywhere in the world. The mod needs no separate recipe beyond two iron ingots and two bones, and Forge and NeoForge builds cover 1.20.1, 1.21.1 and 26.1.2.

The mod is aimed at survival players and server owners who want a tidy way to hold pets. Its config lets a server set the maximum number of familiars the book can hold, with a default of 10, and maintain a blacklist or whitelist of mob types. Entities are not caught automatically by whitelist checks, and server owners can choose to skip the tamed-and-owned checks, so modded creatures may need explicit entries. The server and every player need the mod installed. It is open source under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Familiar Book item

A single craftable item stores tamed creatures, so players carry one object instead of their pets.

  2. Name and stats display

Each stored familiar shows its name and stats inside the book's storage screen.

  3. Search and delete

A search field finds a specific familiar in the book, and a delete button removes unwanted entries.

  4. Familiar tracking

Released familiars appear in a separate tab with their last known location, which updates only while the chunk is loaded.

  5. Revival system

Released familiars can be revived after a cooldown in minutes and an XP cost, and the system can be turned off per familiar or for the whole book in the config.
