Block Limit Fix

by tropheusj

Block Limit Fix lifts the vanilla cap of 524288 total blockstates, so block states beyond that count no longer break server packet serialization.

What it does

The mod fixes a vanilla bug that limits the total number of blockstates to about 500k. Beyond 524288 states, the math used when serializing states in packets breaks down because of a misplaced calculation. Block Limit Fix repairs that calculation so worlds and modpacks with many blockstates keep working. The fix is also backported to older versions and stops being needed once a later vanilla release includes it.

Block Limit Fix runs on the server only, so players join without installing it. It is released for Fabric, Forge and Quilt across the 1.16.5 – 1.19.3 range, with 1.0.5 as the latest file for 1.19.3. The code is open source under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Blockstate limit fix

Removes the vanilla cap that breaks serialization of block states past 524288.

  2. Packet serialization repair

Corrects the misplaced math in state packets so large blockstate counts stay in sync.

  3. Backported fix

Older game versions receive the same repair, which ends once a later vanilla release includes it.

What the author says

Specifically, beyond 524288 states, the math for serializing the states to packets breaks down due to a misplaced cast. This bug is fixed in 1.19.4 / 1.20, whichever comes first. This mod backports it to older versions. Thanks to Patbox for debugging this and figuring out the solution.
