BetterConfig

by xpple

BetterConfig is a Fabric configuration library that lets a mod expose its settings through commands on clients and servers.

FabricClient or server, optionalGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or laterOpen source1.19.3 – 1.21

What it does

A developer registers a Configs class in the mod's onInitialize method on Fabric, or in the plugin's onEnable method on Paper, and the library then builds the commands that read and change those values. Clients and servers use different command roots, so a player edits client settings with one command and a server owner edits server settings with another. The replacement of the mod's identifier in those examples is handled by the developer, not the player.

Once a value is registered, the code can read it directly through the Configs class, and a player can change it at runtime with the config command instead of editing a file. The library also covers cases beyond simple single values: developers can write their own update methods, add setters, adders, putters and removers through the Config annotation, and manage key-value entries in map-based settings. Details of each annotation and parameter are documented in the JavaDocs, and the library's sample Configs classes for Fabric and Paper show a full working setup.

Installation details are short: the library is published for Fabric on the catalog side, for 1.19.3 – 1.21, and it is also offered for Paper as a server platform. Either side can run it, and neither needs it, so a player can run it alone, a server can run it alone, or both can run it. BetterConfig is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or later.

Key features

  1. Command-based configuration

Settings are changed at runtime through a command, so no file edit or restart is needed for the values that support it.

  2. Separate command roots

Clients and servers each get their own command root, so local and server-side settings stay apart.

  3. Custom update behaviour

Developers can replace the default update logic with their own methods for values that need special handling.

  4. Map and key-value entries

Settings that hold many keyed entries can be added, changed and removed through map-based adders and putters.
