Better Tooltips

by 1Foxy2

Better Tooltips is a NeoForge client mod that changes how item tooltips wrap and fit on screen, with several width rules to choose from.

NeoForgeClient-side onlyGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.21 – 1.21.1

What it does

The mod controls how long tooltip text is wrapped. Each wrapping method can be chosen in its settings: lines can be capped at the screen width minus 15 pixels, limited to half the screen width, or wrapped only when one line is considerably longer than the rest, with a hard limit of three quarters of the screen width. The screen width option is meant to be used together with the Bedrock Centering setting.

The mod is a fork of an earlier tooltip project, and its stated aim is readable tooltips for a familiar vanilla look. It is a client-side only mod, so only the client needs it and servers run without it. It is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, is open source, and is published for NeoForge 1.21 and 1.21.1, with 1.0.3 for 1.21.1 as the latest file. Source code and an issue tracker are linked from its page.

Key features

  1. Screen width wrapping

Tooltip lines wrap at the width of the screen minus 15 pixels, so long text stays inside the window.

  2. Half screen width limit

Tooltips can be restricted to half the width of the screen, keeping them away from the opposite side.

  3. Smart wrapping

Only lines that are much longer than the others are wrapped, with a hard limit of three quarters of the screen width.

  4. Configurable methods

The wrapping method is set in the mod's configuration, so players can pick the rule that suits their interface.

Use cases

Reading long item descriptions

Players with long tooltip text, such as modded items with detailed stats, can keep every line on screen.

Pairing with centered HUDs

Players who center their interface can match tooltip width to the screen using the screen width method.

Who it’s for: Players who use NeoForge 1.21 or 1.21.1 and find tooltips hard to read on wide or crowded screens. Servers do not need the mod.
