Better Give
by hextun01
Better Give replaces the vanilla give command with a version that searches items by partial names and offers suggestions as the player types.
What it does
The mod changes the give command rather than adding a new item source. Instead of typing an exact resource location, a player can type a fragment of an item name and pick from a suggestion list that includes every matching item. Searches also work across multiple parts, so irregular characters and words can be combined to narrow the results, and the list shows items whose names or identifiers contain the typed text.
Two commands are registered, a full one and a shorter alias, so the same search works whichever is more convenient to type. Server owners who only want the improved search still need the mod installed on the server, because the command logic runs there. Players who join a server that runs it need the client side too, which is why the environment is client and server.
Better Give is published for Forge across four release versions, 1.16.5 – 1.19.2, with files for 1.16.5, 1.17.1, 1.18.2 and 1.19.2. The latest file, 1.19-1.2, targets 1.19.2 and was released on 2022-09-11. The code is open source under the MIT License, and the source and issue tracker are linked publicly.
Key features
Partial item search
Typing part of an item name or identifier lists every item containing that text, so the full resource location is not needed.
Suggestion list
Matching items appear in a suggestion list while the command is typed, which shows what modded items exist before a search is finished.
Multi-part search
Several words or fragments can be combined in one search, narrowing the list to items matching all of them.
Short command alias
A shorter alias sits next to the full command, so the same improved search can be typed with fewer characters.

How it compares
Torch Key [Forge] is a Forge mod for 1.7.10 – 1.19.3, client-side only and open source under the MIT License, so it changes nothing on the server. Kawatt's Increased Torch Output is open source under the MIT License, supports Fabric, Forge and Quilt for 1.16.5 – 1.20.4, and is server required with the client optional. Container Search is client-side only and open source under the MIT License, targeting Fabric and Forge for 1.20 – 1.20.2, with a different purpose than command completion.
