What it does

Content is written as Lua scripts that run on top of Risugami's ModLoader and Minecraft Forge for b1.7.3, and the mod itself adds no content of its own. Its scripts can define custom blocks, items, tools and armor materials, recipes and recipe types, fluids, biomes, trees, structures and ore generation, along with block and item overrides, tile entities, containers, block GUIs and event handlers. The Lua API is documented on the project wiki.

The design resembles KubeJS, with Lua in place of JavaScript. Setup avoids the obfuscation and compile steps usually needed for Java mods, and the project aims to make scripting simpler for Beta b1.7.3. It is still in early development, so not every feature a modder might want is available yet, and changes can break existing scripts between major versions. Multiplayer support is limited, and installing BetaMoon on a server is advised. Environment is client and server, so the server and every player need it.

Key features

  1. Lua script loader

Custom content is loaded from Lua scripts, which removes the need to write or compile Java for each addition.

  2. Documented API

A Lua API for content creation is described on the project wiki, giving scripts a fixed set of functions to call.

  3. Custom blocks and items

Scripts can register new blocks and items, and they can make existing blocks and items interactive.

  4. Recipes, biomes and ores

Scripts can define recipes and recipe types, biomes, trees, structures, ore generation and custom fluids.

No per-version build data
Modrinth lists game versions for this project (b1.7.3), but the source data has no build per game version and loader, so the compatibility grid is not shown.

Questions

Does BetaMoon need to be installed on the server?

Which loaders does BetaMoon support?

Files are published for Forge, Java Agent and ModLoader, and all of them target Minecraft Beta b1.7.3 only.

Can scripts break after an update?

Possibly. The author designs for backward compatibility, but breaking changes still happen during the pre-release phase between major versions.

What the author says

BetaMoon is a Lua scripting engine on top of Risugami's ModLoader and MinecraftForge for MC b1.7.3. The goal is to provide an easy-to-use scripting layer for MC b1.7.3 to create custom content or functionalities for the game, similar to KubeJS with Lua instead of JS.
