BefriendMobs Framework

by SodiumZH

BefriendMobs Framework is a Forge library that lets modders give hostile and neutral mobs a friendly, tameable behavior without rewriting each mob's class hierarchy.

ForgeClient and serverGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or laterOpen source1.18.2 – 1.20.1

What it does

The library gives developers an API for building features that befriend mobs, such as taming, so that a mob can become friendly to the player. Its stated purpose is to let modders add this behavior to existing mobs regardless of where they sit in the type hierarchy. The author's example is the vanilla tamable mobs, such as the wolf, which already inherit the TamableMob class.

Adding the same behavior to a mob like the zombie is harder through the vanilla API alone. With BefriendMobs, a modder can create a subclass of Zombie, or of any other class that extends Mob, and attach the befriending behavior through the library's own interfaces. Because the approach does not depend on the type hierarchy, it works for mobs that are not tamable in vanilla.

The library is Forge-only and is published for 1.18.2 – 1.20.1, with 0.2.18 for 1.20.1 as the latest file. A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too. The code is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or later, and the source is publicly available.

Key features

  1. Befriending for any mob

Adds friendly and tameable behavior to existing mobs whatever their class hierarchy.

  2. Subclass-based integration

Lets a modder create a subclass of Zombie or another Mob class and befriend it through the library.

  3. Event properties

Exposes event properties in places where the author notes that variables are hard-coded in other code.

  4. Development status

The author says the API may still change, so the library is recommended for developers rather than for end users.

Use cases

Modders adding tameable mobs

A mod author who wants a hostile mob to be tamed can use the library instead of building the interfaces by hand.

Who it’s for: Mod developers who want to give existing mobs taming or friendly behavior in their own Forge mods. Players who only install finished mods do not need to work with the library directly.

Questions

Does BefriendMobs Framework need to be installed on the server?

Yes. The server and every player need the mod installed.

Which Minecraft versions does BefriendMobs Framework support?

Files target 1.18.2 – 1.20.1 on Forge. The library has release files for 1.18.2, 1.19.2 and 1.20.1.

Should a mod depend on a version range of BefriendMobs Framework?

The author recommends specifying an exact library version in a dependency rather than a range, because the API may change during development.

What the author says

BefriendMobs Framework is intended to help modders easily create features of befriending (or say taming) mobs and friendly mobs despite their type hierarchy. For example, most vanilla tamable mobs (e.g. wolf) inherit TamableMob class. If you want to make hostile mobs (e.g. Zombie) friendly or tamed, only using…
