Banitems

by YuWan030

Banitems gives server administrators a way to restrict in-game items, either by stopping their use or by removing them entirely, for Forge servers running 1.20 – 1.20.6.

ForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.20 – 1.20.6

What it does

Administrators choose one of two ban modes for each item. A soft ban keeps the item in the player's inventory but blocks its function, such as placing blocks with a tool. A hard ban stops players from obtaining or holding the item, and the mod removes it automatically once it is detected.

Bans can target a base item ID or a specific variant. The mod reads NBT data, so an enchanted sword or a potion with a custom name can be banned without affecting every copy of that item. An in-game inventory-style screen adds and removes banned items, and a preview shows each entry with its ban type and NBT tags. Manual config editing is also possible.

Commands cover the rest of the work: viewing the ban list and reloading the config without a restart. The mod is published for Forge only, for 1.20, 1.20.1, 1.20.2, 1.20.3, 1.20.4, 1.20.5 and 1.20.6, with 1.0.3 for 1.20.6 as the latest file. It is open source under the MIT License and runs on client and server, so the server and every player need it.

Key features

  1. Soft bans

A soft ban blocks an item's function while leaving it in the player's inventory, for example placing blocks with a tool.

  2. Hard bans

A hard ban keeps the item from being obtained or held, and detected copies are removed automatically.

  3. NBT-aware restrictions

Specific variants such as enchanted swords or custom-named potions can be banned by reading their NBT data, not only the base item ID.

  4. Inventory-style ban GUI

An in-game screen lists banned items with previews showing ban type and NBT tags, and lets admins add or remove entries.

  5. In-game commands

Commands open the ban list and reload the config while the server keeps running.

How it compares

Full comparison

Simple Autoban is server-side only, open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later, and covers 1.20.1 – 1.20.4, so players can join without installing it. SMP Utilities is client and server, not open source, under the CC0 1.0 Universal license, and targets 1.20.1 only. Banitems covers the full 1.20 – 1.20.6 range, which the alternatives do not.

Questions

Does Banitems need to be installed on clients?

Yes. The server and every player need the mod installed.

What is the difference between a soft ban and a hard ban?

A soft ban keeps the item in the inventory but stops it from working. A hard ban stops the item from being obtained or held, and removes detected copies automatically.

Can a server ban only one version of an item?

Yes. NBT-aware restrictions can target an enchanted sword or a custom-named potion, while leaving other copies of the same base item alone.
