Auroras
by Verph
Under clear night skies in high latitudes, Auroras draws colored light curtains, rays and spirals across the sky, with placement set by a configurable Z-coordinate cycle.
What it does
The mod adds aurora displays to the night sky. Each display takes the shape of a sheet of light, a beam, a spiral or a flicker, with hues that run from green and yellow through red, blue and violet. The shapes drift and reshape over time, resembling fabric moving in a light breeze. It works in vanilla without a shaders mod, and it is also built to sit alongside TerraFirmaCraft, the total conversion overhaul of survival play, and to add explicit support for The Aether.
Placement follows a north-south cycle in the overworld. By default the equator sits at Z:10000, with 20000 blocks from there to each pole, and the poles repeat every 40000 blocks. Auroras can therefore appear near Z:-10000 and Z:30000, shifted by a random offset, and at each later or earlier pole cycle. No biome requirement applies by default, though one can be added.
Forge and NeoForge builds are published, with the latest file 1.6.2 for 1.21.3 on NeoForge and 1.6.2 for 1.20.1 on Forge, both dated 2024-12-31. The mod is client-side only, so only the client needs it. Auroras is released under the BSD 2-Clause License and is not open source.
Key features
Colored light curtains
Auroras render as vivid curtains, rays and spirals in colors from green to violet, shifting shape over time.
Configurable wave behavior
Wave frequency, amplitude, colors and many other parameters can be tuned from the config files.
Z-based placement cycle
The equator and pole distances can be set, so aurora zones repeat along the north-south axis at chosen intervals.
Biome-free by default
Auroras appear without any biome requirement, and a biome filter can be added through the settings.
Explicit Aether support
The mod includes compatibility code for The Aether, so auroras can appear in that dimension.
