AudioThrottle
by Noslow
AudioThrottle is a client-side Fabric mod that limits how many identical sounds play at once in crowded areas, so the sound engine handles dense farms and villager hubs with less load.
What it does
When hundreds of identical sounds would play together, the mod caps the number that can sound within a small radius, which keeps the mix from clipping into distortion. Ambient loops, entity noises and block interactions are all covered, and the cap applies by sound identifier rather than by a fixed list.
Frame rate gains come from skipping redundant audio processing before it reaches the client. The author reports an 11% increase in average frame rate and a 14% gain in minimum frame stability in vanilla stress tests with many crowded entities; these figures come from the author and were not independently verified. Vanilla positional audio is kept for the sounds that remain.
The mod works without configuration. Only the client needs it, so servers run without it, and it changes no server logic, mob behavior or audio tracks. The author states it is compatible with proximity voice chat mods. Builds cover 1.21 – 26.3 on Fabric, and the license is Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial No Derivatives 4.0, so the mod is not open source.
Key features
Sound density cap
Identical sounds within a tight radius are limited to a dynamic count, which removes the overlapping noise of large groups.
Frame stability in crowds
Redundant sound processing is cut at the source, aiming to smooth frame drops around farms and trading halls.
Coverage of common sounds
The cap applies to entity sounds, block interactions and environmental loops alike.
No setup required
The defaults apply on first launch, with no options to adjust before the cap takes effect.

Use cases
Crowded farms
Large animal pens and mob farms produce many identical sounds at once, where the cap removes the redundant ones.
Villager trading halls
Dense villager areas with constant trading and walking noise benefit from the same limit on repeated sounds.
Who it’s for: Players who run large builds or crowded farms on a client-side setup, and players who use proximity voice chat and want less sound clutter around them.

TabScroller is also open source and MIT licensed, but covers 1.19.4 – 1.21.11 and handles interface scrolling rather than sound.

What the author says
AudioThrottle is a lightweight client-side mod that improves the Minecraft sound engine. Instead of allowing hundreds of identical sounds to play simultaneously and clip into a deafening wall of digital noise, the mod dynamically limits sound saturation within a tight radius. The result is a clean, natural group…
