Ashen's Better AI

by Ashen_Arrow

Ashen's Better AI changes how vanilla mobs hunt, throw and eat, through a datapack that runs on the server.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltServer required, client optionalAll rights reserved1.21 – 1.21.1

What it does

The pack alters the behavior of several vanilla mobs. Zombies build up stacks of wool, dirt and other blocks, chase sheep, pigs, chickens, cows and wolves, and eat meat they drop. Phantoms spawn at random sizes and are hunted by undead mobs. Spiders throw webs at players, and skeletons back away while shooting. Squids are hunted by salmon and cod, wolves by chickens, cows and pigs, and polar bears by strays, husks and zombies.

Installation is server-side: the datapack is placed in the world, and players join without installing anything. Ashen's Better AI is released under All rights reserved and is not open source. Files are published for 1.21 and 1.21.1, and the Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt builds are all 1.1 for 1.21.1, last updated on 2025-08-03. The first version was published on 2024-09-05.

Key features

  1. Mob jumping

Mobs gain the ability to jump, which lets them reach players and blocks they could not climb before.

  2. Food chain

Predators hunt the animals below them, and zombies eat dropped meat to recover health.

  3. Zombie block breaking

Zombies break blocks that a held axe or pickaxe can dig through, and they kill and eat other zombies.

  4. Thrown items

Zombies throw logs, striped logs and cobblestone at a player they are chasing, and spiders throw webs.

Use cases

Survival worlds

Players who want mobs to behave less predictably can run the pack on a survival server to change how night and animal areas play out.

Food chain experiments

Server owners can set up a world where predators and prey interact across the whole animal population.

Who it’s for: Server owners who run a vanilla world and want its mobs to hunt and throw items. Because the pack changes behavior on the server, it suits multiplayer worlds, and players connecting to such a server need nothing extra installed.

What the author says

Ashens Better AI is a datapack focused on improving the vanilla game AI by allowing mobs to jump, throw items, hunt, and more. This pack even has a working food chain to make the game even more immersive! Zombies can build up to you if they have any color of wool or dirt in their hand.
