Ageratum

by Gu-ZT

Ageratum is a NeoForge library that lets other mods ship in-game guides written in Markdown, with rendering, localization and a custom syntax system.

NeoForgeClient required, server optionalGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.21.1 – 26.1.2

What it does

Guidebook mods on NeoForge can use Ageratum to display documentation inside the game. It renders a Markdown dialect with ATX and Setext headings, paragraphs with line breaks, ordered, unordered and task lists with multi-level nesting, blockquotes, fenced and indented code blocks, horizontal rules and tables with alignment settings. Guides can be translated through its i18n localization support, and the library exists so that other mods can offer documentation in the game.

Guide authors can extend the format with two block-level extension syntaxes and custom components. A recipe extension renders crafting recipes directly inside a document, and a structure extension renders a top-down block preview and a bounded NBT tree for .nbt files. Interactive text can show a hover tooltip or run an action on click, and several styles can be combined on the same text. Inline style parsers are registered through a registry key, and a client command opens guides, with tab completion for namespaces and file names.

Ageratum is client required and server optional, so players need it to read guides while the server can add it for extra features. It is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only and is published for NeoForge 1.21.1 and 26.1.2.

Key features

  1. Markdown rendering

Headings, lists, blockquotes, code blocks, horizontal rules and tables are rendered from Markdown text inside the game.

  2. Custom syntax and components

Two block-level extension syntaxes and custom components let guide authors add their own document elements.

  3. Interactive text

Text can show a hover tooltip or perform an action when clicked, and several styles can be combined on the same text.

  4. Recipe and structure previews

Recipes are drawn inside documents, and structure files show a block preview and a bounded NBT tree.

  5. Extensible inline parsing

Inline style parsers and recipe component factories can be registered through the library's registries.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Mod authors who want in-game documentation, and modpack makers who need guides with recipe or structure previews. Players read the guides, while the library itself only needs to be on the client.

Questions

Does a player need Ageratum to read a guide?

Yes. The mod is needed in the player's game, and the server may leave it out. The server may skip it unless it adds extra features.

Which game versions does Ageratum support?

Files are published for 1.21.1 and 26.1.2, with 26.1.2-0.0.1+build.128 as the latest NeoForge file for 26.1.2, dated 2026-10-03.

How are guide files opened in the game?

A client command opens a guide, and tab completion suggests supported namespaces and file names.
