visbarrier

by terrorists

visbarrier is a Forge client mod that changes how barrier blocks are drawn and lets players toggle their visibility.

ForgeClient-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.8 – 1.12.2

What it does

Barrier blocks are normally invisible in survival, which makes them hard to see while building or playing adventure maps. visbarrier draws them so they can be spotted, and a key binding switches their visibility on and off. A chat notification confirms each toggle, and the mod settings and commands control how it behaves.

The mod uses a rendering approach that the author describes as more efficient than the original barrier drawing, with connected textures and continuous rendering as part of the look. Its rendering is meant to be light on performance. Only the client needs the mod, so servers run without it and players join normally. The code is released under the MIT License and is open source. Its source code and issue tracker are public.

Files are published for Forge only, covering 24 release versions, with 2.1.0 for 1.12.2 as the latest file. The author notes that version 2 started as a fork of an earlier barrier mod under the MIT License, and that connected textures behave differently on 1.12.2 than on 1.8.9.

Key features

  1. Barrier visibility toggle

A key binding, set to B by default, switches barrier blocks between visible and hidden.

  2. Toggle confirmation

A chat message confirms each change, so the current state is clear without opening a menu.

  3. Connected textures

Neighboring barrier blocks join their textures into a continuous surface when the option applies.

  4. Resource pack override

A resource pack that supplies its own barrier texture replaces the mod's appearance, and connected textures step aside.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Players who build with barrier blocks and map makers who use them as invisible boundaries. Because the mod runs only on the client, a server does not need it for players to join.

Questions

Does visbarrier need to be installed on the server?

No. Servers do not need it; each player installs it for their own game. A server can run without it.

Which game versions does visbarrier support?

Files cover 24 release versions. The latest Forge file is 2.1.0 for 1.12.2.

Do resource packs change the barrier look?

Yes. A resource pack that provides its own barrier texture overrides the mod's appearance, and the mod's connected textures are bypassed.
