Villager Workers

by talhanation

Villager Workers turns idle villagers into hireable labour that farms, cooks or fishes once a matching Work Area is placed in the world.

ForgeClient and serverAll rights reserved1.18.2 – 1.20.1

What it does

A worker is only the labour. The task is set by a Work Area that the player places, and assigning a worker the matching job makes it walk to the nearest area it may use and start. Work Areas include farm plots, lumber areas, fishing spots, animal pens, mining volumes, a builder area, kitchens and markets, and most of them look for nearby chests or containers on their own.

The mod is built on top of a recruit system, so workers follow the same ownership, faction, payment and upkeep rules as recruits. Villager breeding also changes: villagers breed from the saturation value of the food they eat rather than from a fixed list of items, with a configurable threshold and an option to switch the behaviour off in the config. The mod is published for Forge across 1.18.2 – 1.20.1.

Key features

  1. Task-based workers

Each worker is given a job, and the job runs wherever the matching Work Area is placed.

  2. Farming and lumber areas

A farm area is a 9×9 plot for planting and harvesting, and a lumber area lets workers plant and fell trees.

  3. Mining and building volumes

Miners excavate a volume with adjustable height, width and depth, while the Builder works from its own area.

  4. Kitchens and markets

A kitchen needs a furnace and a chest, and a market needs chests, after which a merchant can move in and trade.

  5. Saturation-based breeding

Villagers breed once their food reaches a saturation threshold, which defaults to 15 and can be changed in the config.

Use cases

Automated farms

A base owner places a farm area and assigns a farmer, so crops are planted and harvested without manual work.

Town economy

A market with chests gives a merchant a stock to trade from, and its earnings are stored in those chests.

Who it’s for: Players who run a settlement or faction on a survival world or a server and want villagers to handle routine jobs. Server owners need the mod on the server and on every player's client.

Questions

Does Villager Workers need another mod installed?

Yes. Workers depend on a recruit system for its ownership, faction and upkeep rules, so that mod must be installed alongside it.

Must the mod be installed on both sides?

Yes. Installation covers the server and each player's game.

Which game versions have files?

Forge files exist for 1.18.2, 1.19.2 and 1.20.1, with 2.0.3 for 1.20.1 as the latest file released on 2026-07-01.

Can breeding be turned off?

Yes. The saturation-based breeding can be disabled in the config through VillagerBreedMixinEnabled, and its threshold is set by VillagerBreedSaturationThreshold.
