Utility Meters

by marcin212

Utility Meters adds an RF Meter block that shows the Forge Energy passing through a spliced transmission line, with a counter mode and a prepaid mode that can cut off the flow.

ForgeClient and serverzlib LicenseOpen source1.20.1

What it does

Placed in a cable line, the RF Meter receives power through its top face and outputs it through the bottom, displaying current throughput and the running total. Shift-right-clicking with an empty hand reverses the direction of flow. A redstone signal on the back face stops RF transmission, and the block can also be toggled to switch energy flow off and change the color of its display. Right-clicking with an empty hand opens a simple screen that shows the same information.

The mod's settings menu, opened with a Settings button, exposes finer control over the meter. Transfer can be limited to a rate in RF per tick with 1 RF/t precision. The meter can switch between Counter mode, which only counts throughput and total transfer, and Prepaid mode, which cuts off energy flow after a set amount has been transferred. Settings can be locked with a password. In Prepaid mode the GUI gains two extra displays, Prepaid Left and Prepaid To, and when Prepaid Left reaches 0 the meter disables energy flow.

The project is open source under the zlib License, with public source code and an issue tracker. The mod is set up for client and server, so the server and every player need it. The author notes that Meter Fluids offers the same functionality for fluids, and that a gas variant for Mekanism may be possible; neither is part of this mod.

Key features

  1. RF Meter block

A placeable block that sits inline on a Forge Energy cable and reports the power crossing it.

  2. Counter and prepaid modes

Counter mode tracks throughput and total transfer, while prepaid mode stops energy flow once the set amount has passed.

  3. Rate limiting

Transfer can be capped in RF per tick, with 1 RF/t precision, to restrict how much power moves through the line.

  4. Password-locked settings

The meter's settings can be locked behind a password, so other players cannot change the configuration.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Players running Forge Energy networks on 1.20.1 who want to measure or limit power flow in a transmission line, and server owners who want the same control on a multiplayer world.

Questions

Does Utility Meters need to be installed on the server?

Yes. Every player and the server need a copy of the mod.

Which loader and game version does Utility Meters support?

Utility Meters is published for Forge only, for 1.20.1, with the 1.2 file dated 2024-02-06.

How does Prepaid mode decide when to cut off energy?

In Prepaid mode the Prepaid Left display counts down from the set amount by subtracting the total transferred, and when it reaches 0 the meter disables energy flow.

What the author says

The RF Meter is designed to be spliced into an existing RF (Forge Energy compatible) transmission line and display current throughput and total transfer. When placed, the block by default receives RF through the top and outputs through the bottom. The flow can be reversed by Shift-Right-Clicking with an empty hand…
