Tyr's Fluid Void Stuff

by Tyrthurey

Tyr's Fluid Void Stuff changes how fluid columns fall and render once they reach a configured drop height, and it is built for NeoForge on 1.21.1.

NeoForgeClient or server, optionalGNU General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.21.1

What it does

On a server, the mod enforces a cap on how far a fluid column may descend. When a column reaches that cap, it stops spreading downward and leaves air beneath it. The distance is counted as a straight vertical drop, so a source falls the same amount whether the flow drops directly or zig-zags downward. Individual fluids can be exempted through a blacklist, and the setting applies to water, lava and modded fluids alike.

On the client side, the mod ports a fade renderer so the bottom of a cut-off fluid column dissolves gradually instead of ending in a hard edge. The renderer is a NeoForge port of an earlier fade effect by DaFuqs, and it is supported alongside Sodium, which is listed as a required dependency. The client config can be opened from the Mods screen in-game.

The mod is licensed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only and is open source, with public source code and an issue tracker. Neither side requires the other, so it can run on a client alone, a server alone, or both. Servers that want to limit waterfalls need it on the server, and players who want the smoother render need it on the client.

Key features

  1. Vertical drop limit

The server caps how far a fluid column can fall, so very tall waterfalls no longer form.

  2. Straight-line measurement

The limit counts straight vertical distance, so zig-zagging flows are measured the same way as direct drops.

  3. Fluid blacklist

Individual fluids can be exempted from the drop limit through a blacklist in the config.

  4. Faded column bottoms

The bottom of a cut-off fluid column fades out smoothly on the client instead of ending in a hard edge.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Server owners who want to limit tall fluid columns, and players who want the faded column bottoms on the client. Modpacks that already use Sodium can add it without changing the rest of the rendering setup.

How it compares

Full comparison

Void Water is client required and server optional, released under the MIT License and open source, with builds for 1.21.1 – 1.21.11. Waterfall Limit is also open source under the MIT License and covers 1.21.1 – 1.21.11, but it runs on client and server together. Void Spawn Fix is server-side only, not open source, and targets 1.21 – 1.21.1, so players join without installing it.

Questions

Does Tyr's Fluid Void Stuff require Sodium?

Yes. Sodium is the required dependency, and the client renderer is supported alongside it.

Does the server need the mod for the drop limit to work?

Yes. The limit is a server setting, so the server has to run the mod. The client part only adds the faded column bottoms.

Which loader and version does the mod cover?

It is published for NeoForge only, and the single game version is 1.21.1. The latest NeoForge file is 1.0.1.

What the author says

This mod is all about two things: 1. Fade out fluids that do not end on a block so that they look pretty in void environments (Clientside, does not require mod on server) 2. Limit how far a liquid can fall from its source block to prevent huge waterfalls (Serverside, does not require mod on client) The client…
