Tense Ambience
by Cyberking42
Tense Ambience layers biome-specific ambient sounds over the default dimensions, which suits horror modpacks and quiet exploration on the client.
What it does
Ambient sounds change with the biome a player stands in, and the mod recognizes biomes by searching their names for tags. A randomized sound system plays effects at intervals, and the sound set can be customized. The latest updates rebuilt the configuration with a biome blacklist and per-biome toggles, so changed settings are not carried over from older config files.
Only the client needs the mod, and it does not work on a server. Fabric builds require Fabric API, while Forge builds need nothing extra. Files cover game versions 1.18 – 1.21.8 and were last updated on 2026-01-03. The mod is released under All rights reserved and is not open source.
Key features
Biome-specific ambience
Ambient sound changes as the player moves between biomes, including desert and swamp support added in later updates.
Custom sound files
Any MP3 placed in the sounds folder is loaded as ambience, and the bundled sound files can be replaced.
Biome blacklist
Players can exclude selected biomes from receiving ambience or toggle each biome individually in the config.
Smoother transitions
The volume slider now changes gradually, and transitions between sounds were stabilized to reduce abrupt cuts and fades.

Use cases
Horror modpacks
Tense sounds suit modpacks built around dark forests and night exploration.
Quiet exploration
A solo player can add atmosphere to long walks through the default biomes without changing the world.
Who it’s for: Players who run single-player or client-side setups and want biome-based ambience. Server owners do not need it, since the mod is not installed on servers.
How it compares
Volume Fix is open source under the MIT License, works on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, and covers 1.19 – 26.2, so it targets a wider set of loaders. New Ambient Music is also client-side, runs on Fabric and Forge for 1.20.1 – 26.2, and is licensed as All rights reserved without being open source. Murmora uses Forge only for 1.20.1 and runs on both client and server, while Tense Ambience is client-side only.
