Soul Pyres

by sigmastar00

Soul Pyres is a server-side datapack that adds a buildable structure, the soul pyre, which stops natural hostile mob spawns within 64 blocks while it stays active.

FabricForgeQuiltServer required, client optionalMIT LicenseOpen source1.16.1 – 1.20.1

What it does

A soul pyre is built from four crying obsidian blocks placed one block apart in a square, with a soul sand or soul soil block set one block above the center. Lighting the soul sand with fire activates it, and the game signals success with green particles and a blaze sound. Any empty spaces inside the square can be filled with whatever blocks a builder wants, and the fire on top counts as part of the structure. Once built, the pyre remains active until one of its blocks is removed.

While active, a pyre clears hostile mobs that appear in its surroundings. Mobs that already exist, whether generated with the world or found outside the radius, are not affected. Walls around areas that should stay clear of hostiles still have to be built by hand. A soul torch held in the hand reacts to a pyre and gives off flame particles when the player is within its range, which helps when checking whether an area is covered. Raid mobs are unaffected by pyres.

The mob list is set by the tag sigmastar:pyre/pyre, and the default tag includes Magma Cube, Zombie Villager and Zombified Piglin. The default list is meant to guard against hostiles that spawn naturally without needing a spawner structure. The datapack is open source under the MIT License, does not require a resource pack, and has been tested on Minecraft versions up to 1.20.1. Files are published for Fabric, Forge and Quilt across 17 game versions, 1.16.1 – 1.20.1.

Key features

  1. Buildable soul pyre

A four-block crying obsidian frame, a soul block and a lit fire form a structure that can be placed anywhere in survival.

  2. Hostile spawn prevention

Active pyres stop natural hostile mob spawns within a 64-block radius around the structure.

  3. Configurable mob list

The mobs a pyre protects against are set through the sigmastar:pyre/pyre tag, so the list can be changed in a datapack.

  4. Light-independent building

Because hostiles are blocked by the pyre itself, players can build without relying on lighting alone.

How it compares

Full comparison

Soul Soil Craft is a Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt option for 1.16 – 26.2, licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and it is not open source. Only Zombies Spawn is server-side only and open source under the MIT License, covering 1.18.2 – 26.2 on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge. Soul Pyres differs in that it adds a physical structure players build rather than changing spawn rules alone.

Questions

Does Soul Pyres need to be installed on the client?

No. It works on the server alone, and players can join without installing the datapack, so only the server needs it.

Can the mob list be changed?

Yes. The protected mobs are defined by the tag sigmastar:pyre/pyre, which can be edited in a datapack.

Does a pyre stop mobs that already exist?

No. Mobs spawned during world generation or outside the radius are not affected, and raid mobs are unaffected by pyres.
