Snow Altitude

by Raspberry1111

Snow Altitude changes when snow falls: a biome turns cold above a set height, so players see snowfall on high ground instead of rain.

NeoForgeServer-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.21.1

What it does

A biome's base temperature decides whether it rains or snows, and in vanilla Minecraft the temperature drops as the player climbs above y 80. Snow Altitude lets a server switch the rain-or-snow check to a value taken from each biome file, so the height at which snow starts can be tuned per biome. Biome values are read from a biome.json file, and the snow level is set in the config.

Snow Altitude runs on the server alone, so players join without installing it. It is published for NeoForge only, for 1.21.1, with 0.0.1 as the single file, and the code is open source under the MIT License. Both the source code and the issue tracker are public.

Key features

  1. Snow instead of rain

A config setting changes whether a biome checks for rain or snow, so high biomes can produce snowfall.

  2. Per-biome base temperature

The base temperature of each biome is read from its biome.json file, so the threshold can differ between biomes.

  3. Adjustable snow level

The config holds a snow level value, set to 800 by default, that controls the height where snowing begins.

  4. Adjusted temperature formula

The temperature used for snowing is calculated from the snow temperature and the base biome temperature.

Use cases

Snowy mountain biomes

A server owner can make peaks and high plateaus snow while lower areas keep rain.

Custom biome packs

Pack authors can set the base temperature of their own biomes to decide where snowfall starts.

Who it’s for: Server owners and world builders who want snowfall at specific heights. Because the mod is server-side only, it suits multiplayer servers and single-player worlds that need only one install.

Eternal Christmas is a NeoForge mod for 1.21 – 1.21.11 that needs both the client and server, released under the MIT License. Snow Altitude differs from both by being server-side only, so players install nothing.

What the author says

Adds a config setting to change the temperature at which rain and snow switch for a biome. Minecraft lowers the temperature of a biome as the y-level goes above y=80, which means colder biomes like tiagas can start snowing once they reach a certain y-level because their adjusted temperature is low enough.
