Safe(ish) Respawn
by fennifith
Safe(ish) Respawn stops a player from being trapped in a death loop, where hostile mobs spawned near the spawn point keep killing the player on every respawn.
What it does
Hostile mobs normally despawn only when no player is nearby, so a horde that gathers near a spawn point can keep a returning player dead again and again. This mod changes the despawn logic so that hostile mobs can also despawn while a living player is close by, which lets a player respawn without a crowd waiting at the same place. The effect applies only when the player's area is otherwise clear of other players.
The mod is server-side only, so a server owner installs it and players join without adding anything to their game. It runs on Fabric and Quilt, with builds for 1.19 – 1.21.8, and the latest files are 1.0.3 for 1.21.8. The author notes that the change may break some mob farms that use the Nether or End portals, and asks that unintended effects be reported through the issue tracker. The source code is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only.
Key features
Despawn near living players
Hostile mobs can despawn while a living player stands nearby, not only when every player is far away.
Respawn without a horde
A player who dies near a group of hostile mobs can respawn without the same group waiting at the spawn point.
Other players' areas respected
The change does not apply where other players are present, so the effect stays limited to the affected player.
Known side effects
Some mob farms that rely on the Nether or End portals may behave differently, as the author warns.

How it compares
InstaRespawn is a client-side only option that is open source under the MIT License, with files for 1.17 – 1.21.1 on Fabric and Quilt, so it changes the client rather than the server. Sprint After Death is also client-side only and open source, under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, with files for 1.20 – 26.3 on Fabric and Quilt. Spawning control takes a different route on Forge, server-side only and under the MIT License, with files for 1.20.1 – 1.20.4, and is not open source.

What the author says
Normally, hostile Minecraft mobs will only despawn when the player is very far away. This can cause problems if the player encounters a horde of mobs near their spawnpoint, which can trap them in an endless death loop with the same mobs. This mod changes the entity logic to allow mobs to despawn if there is no living…
