Rolling Giant: Oldest View

by Zcoper

Rolling Giant: Oldest View is a Forge horror mod that adds an abandoned mall deep underground, along with a creature that starts hunting after a player enters it.

ForgeClient and serverAll rights reserved1.19.2 – 1.20.1

What it does

Once a player enters the abandoned mall, the Rolling Giant begins to spawn outside and hunts the player wherever they go. The creature waits motionless and watches while it is unseen, and it appears to know where the player is. Looking away from it at the wrong moment is the mistake the mod punishes. The mod is built as an analog horror series, aimed at players who want a tense, unsettling experience.

The mall structure generates mostly in forests and plains and is rare, since its only visible sign at the surface is a single block on the ground. Players can find it with the locate command. The Rolling Giant can be made harmless with a game rule: setting mobGriefing to false stops it from breaking blocks, and setting rollingGiantSpawning to 2 makes it spawn at once. The creature only moves when no player is looking at it, and it stops when a player stands roughly 100 blocks away, where the raycasting check no longer works.

The mod requires Geckolib, which must be installed alongside it. Files are published for Forge only, for 1.19.2 – 1.20.1 across three release versions: 1.19.2, 1.19.4 and 1.20.1. The author recommends the newest version, 1.20.1, because 1.19.2 lacks some structure generation and custom villager features. It is licensed as All rights reserved, so it is not open source, and it runs on client and server.

Key features

  1. Abandoned mall structure

A hidden mall lies deep underground and is entered from one surface block, leading to the mobs and horror setting.

  2. Rolling Giant behavior

The creature stays still while watched, spawns outside after the mall is entered and hunts the player across the map.

  3. Game rules for control

The mobGriefing and rollingGiantSpawning rules let server owners stop block breaking or trigger the spawn instantly.

  4. Spawn-condition handling

Rolling Giant follows spawning conditions that the mod sets, and a raycast check stops movement beyond about 100 blocks.
