Re: Translator

Re: Translator fills in missing language keys by machine translation when a game's own text is absent in the player's chosen language, so block names and item descriptions can be read.

What it does

Re: Translator automatically translates language keys that a modpack lacks for the current game language. Its aim is to let players read in-game text, from labels on blocks to descriptions on items and entries in manual books. The only translation source at present is Google Translate API, and the author plans to add more APIs later.

Translated strings are cached per language and stored in a ReTranslatorCache directory in the game's root folder, so later launches reuse them. Machine output can be imperfect, and the cache files can be edited by hand to correct a translation. Because many objects are translated once, a first launch of a modpack with an uncached language can take several minutes; progress is printed to the logs and depends on the internet connection, hardware and size of the modpack. Translations run during the pre-initialization stage.

Selecting a new game language requires a relaunch. Some mods store their text in a main language file that the translator does not detect, so the file can be named in the mod's config. Translation also fails when the selected API cannot handle a given text, or when a mod uses a localization method other than standard language files.

Key features

  1. Automatic key translation

Missing language keys are translated automatically into the language the player has chosen.

  2. Per-language cache

Results are stored under ReTranslatorCache in the game root folder, so each language is translated once.

  3. Manual adjustment

Cached entries can be corrected by hand when the automatic output does not fit the intended meaning.

  4. Main language file setting

The mod's config can name the main language file for mods that place their text outside the standard lang files.

Questions

Does Re: Translator need ASJCore?

Yes. ASJCore is a required dependency and must be installed alongside Re: Translator on Forge 1.7.10.

Does the server need Re: Translator installed?

No. Servers do not need it; each player installs it for their own game.

Why does the first launch take so long?

Each uncached language key is sent for translation once, and the progress is printed to the logs. The wait depends on the internet connection, the hardware and the size of the modpack.

What the author says

This mod is created for people all around the globe to allow them understand any in-game text, may it be block names, item descriptions, and even manual books. For now it uses only Google Translate API, with more APIs to select from coming in the future.
