Prehistoric Fauna

by superlord9362

Prehistoric Fauna is a Forge and NeoForge mod that adds travel to prehistoric eras, where extinct animals and plants still live in recreated landscapes.

ForgeNeoForgeClient and serverAll rights reserved1.16.4 – 1.20.1

What it does

Players reach past periods through portals and time travel, entering dimensions built on three Mesozoic periods. Each period's biomes are meant to match the geological formations of that time. Surviving in these landscapes is the core of the mod, and the worlds are meant to be explored rather than only passed through.

The mod adds 21 extinct species, from early ancestors to dinosaurs and mammals, including Chromogisaurus, Exaeretodon, giant forms and Cretaceous animals such as Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus. It also adds 7 unique trees and 12 unique plants. The mod is client and server, so servers and every player need it. Files cover 1.16.4, 1.16.5 and 1.20.1, and the license is All rights reserved. Prehistoric Revival - A Prehistoric Fauna Add-On requires it.

Key features

  1. Three Mesozoic dimensions

Each dimension represents a different period of the Mesozoic, with biomes arranged to reflect that era's geology.

  2. 21 extinct species

The creature set covers early ancestors, dinosaurs and mammals across several eras, from small ancient animals to giants.

  3. Trees and plants

Seven unique trees and twelve unique plants are added to the overworld and the period dimensions.

  4. Time gem and totem portals

A boss named Henos drops a Time Gem, which is combined with a fossil to craft a totem for a given period. The portal is built in a shape similar to the End Portal, though larger.

Questions

Does Prehistoric Fauna need to be installed on the server?

Yes. A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too.

What is needed to travel between periods?

A player must first defeat the Henos boss, then combine its Time Gem with a fossil to craft a totem for the period. The portal is then built in a shape similar to the End Portal.

Which versions does Prehistoric Fauna support?

Files exist for 1.16.4, 1.16.5 and 1.20.1. The latest Forge and NeoForge files are 2.3.3 for 1.20.1, published 2025-03-14.
