Petrichor

by jisk

Petrichor, a data pack by jisk, changes how Sniffers grow and interact with plants, adding new behaviors to the Sniffer mob's plant mechanics.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltServer required, client optionalGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only1.21.6 – 1.21.8

What it does

Petrichor expands the plants that Sniffers dig up and grow. Soil can be fed so that it yields more, a reaping action returns balm, and a Pitcher Plant can turn hungry and draw in nearby creatures. Torchflowers can bloom, and their new emissive texture makes them glow in dark areas. Some items are exclusive to the Sniffer plants, and Sniffers can be ridden. Most of the content is built to sit alongside vanilla behavior without interfering with it, and players find it through advancements and other in-game clues rather than a list.

Installation is needed on the server, because the server is the side that runs the content, and players can join it without installing anything. The data pack works on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across three release versions, 1.21.6 – 1.21.8, and the latest file is 1.0.2 for 1.21.8. It is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only and is not open source. Its functions spawn items and mobs using loot and summon commands, so the mechanics can be adjusted by editing those files.

Key features

  1. Fed soil

Feeding soil changes what the Sniffer digs up, giving the plants a new source of growth.

  2. Reaping balm

A reaping action returns balm from Sniffer plants, adding an item route that vanilla does not provide.

  3. Hungry Pitcher Plant

The Pitcher Plant gets a hungry state with a new texture, changing how it reacts to nearby creatures.

  4. Rideable Sniffers

Sniffers can be ridden, which adds a travel option to the mob without changing its digging behavior.

  5. Emissive Torchflowers

Blooming Torchflowers use an emissive texture, so the flower stays lit in dark areas.

How it compares

Full comparison

Biome Sniffer is open source under the MIT License, is server required with an optional client, and is published for 1.21 – 1.21.1 on all four loaders. Sniffer Ride is a client and server mod under All rights reserved, for 1.21.4 on Fabric and Quilt only, so it requires the client side as well. Camille's Sniffer Loot Expansion covers 1.21.9 – 1.21.11, which is outside Petrichor's range.
