Options Rewriter

by Sjym

Options Rewriter applies a modpack's provided options.txt on first launch, so players start with the pack's own keybindings and client settings.

ForgeNeoForgeClient-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.18.2 – 1.21.11

What it does

On the first launch after installation, Options Rewriter replaces the player's options.txt with the one shipped in the modpack. This restores keybindings and client settings that an import would otherwise reset. A flag file is created when the rewrite finishes, so later customizations made by the player are not overwritten on subsequent starts.

The rewrite can also be triggered manually from the mod's configuration. A configuration screen lets a modpack creator save the current settings as a reusable template, and the replacement can be run again whenever needed. Restart prompts are shown after the change, and the replacement happens silently otherwise.

Options Rewriter runs on the client only, so a server does not need it and players install it on their own game. It is built for Forge and NeoForge, published for 1.18.2 – 1.21.11, and released under the MIT License as open source.

Key features

  1. Automatic first-launch rewrite

The modpack's options.txt is written over the player's file the first time the game starts with the mod installed.

  2. Preserved player changes

Once the rewrite has run, a flag file stops it from repeating, so later changes to controls and settings remain.

  3. Template saving

The configuration screen can capture the current settings as a template for reuse across modpack releases.

  4. Manual trigger

The rewrite can be started again from the configuration whenever a modpack needs its controls restored.

Use cases

Large modpacks

Packs with many keybindings and carefully designed default controls can ship those defaults so every player starts the same way.

Reliable first-launch setup

Modpack creators who need a predictable initial configuration can rely on the rewrite happening once, at first launch.

Who it’s for: Modpack creators who ship custom controls and client settings, and players who import a pack and want its defaults to stay in place.

Questions

Does Options Rewriter need to be installed on the server?

No. The mod is client-side only, so only the client needs it and a server runs without it.

Will the rewrite overwrite changes a player makes later?

No. A flag file is created when the rewrite completes, so later customizations are not replaced on subsequent launches.

Which loaders does Options Rewriter support?

Files exist for Forge and NeoForge. The latest Forge file is 1.0.1 for 1.20.6, and the latest NeoForge file is 1.0.1 for 1.21.11.

Can the rewrite be run again after the first launch?

Yes. It can be triggered manually through the mod's configuration, and a template of the current settings can be saved for reuse.
