What it does

Ocean API is a Forge library for Minecraft 1.12.2 that adds ocean biomes, per-biome water colors and entity buckets. It also swaps the vanilla water textures for new grayscale textures that are tinted at runtime, so the tint can change with the biome a player is in. Because the new water textures are registered as sprites that replace the vanilla ones, mods that reference the old textures keep working. Client and server both need the mod, so installation has to happen on the server and on every player's client.

The water coloring can be tuned through a configuration file. A config setting is disabled by default and turns on the modern water textures. Those textures are taken from newer Minecraft versions, and the config setting requires AssetMover and Aqua Acrobatics to be installed, since they provide the way Ocean API grabs the modern water textures. Aqua Acrobatics also gets full support for its biome water colors, which register automatically once they are enabled. Support also exists for water fluids from Simple Difficulty and Underdog.

The project page includes screenshots taken with the Faithful 32x and Tropical Waters packs, which change how water looks once the new textures are applied.

Key features

  1. Ocean biomes

Adds ocean biomes to the world, with their own water colors and entity buckets.

  2. Grayscale water textures

New grayscale water textures are colored at runtime, so the tint follows the biome instead of being fixed.

  3. Biome water color entries

A config entry pairs a biome id or biome tag, prefixed with a pound sign, with a color. Incomplete or badly formatted entries are skipped and show a missing texture, which makes bad entries easier to find.

  4. Modern water textures option

A config setting, disabled by default, switches to modern water textures taken from newer Minecraft versions.

  5. Compatibility with existing mods

Replacing the vanilla sprites keeps mods that reference the old water textures working, and Simple Difficulty and Underdog water fluids are supported.

Questions

Does Ocean API need other mods to use the modern water textures?

Yes. The config setting requires AssetMover and Aqua Acrobatics to be installed, because they provide the way Ocean API grabs the modern water textures.

Does Ocean API have to be installed on the server?

Yes. The server and every player need the mod installed.

Why does a biome color entry show a missing texture?

An entry that is incomplete, badly formatted or uses an unrecognized biome id or color is skipped, and the renderer shows a missing texture to signal this.

What the author says

The new grayscale water textures used by Ocean API are generated dynamically at runtime and change depending on your resource packs! Screenshots shown below are using the Faithful 32x and Tropical Waters resource packs. Ocean API also provides a config setting (disabled by default) to enable the modern water textures…
