No Surface Lava

by Misty6K

Players who keep finding lava lakes on the surface can use No Surface Lava, which stops those lakes from generating in new worlds.

What it does

Lava lakes that appear on the surface of a newly generated world are removed from world generation by No Surface Lava. The mod is offered as either a mod or a data pack, and version 1.1 provides both options as a single file that supports the 1.21.x releases. Lava flooding that spreads outside mountains is also covered, and lava lakes underground are not affected, which leaves the Nether portal lava that players rely on untouched.

The mod is aimed at players who lose forests and landscapes to surface lava, and at server owners who host worlds for several players, since lava setting fire to trees can cause lag and stutters on busy instances. The server needs the mod to change generation, while players may leave it out. The mod is released under the MIT License and is not open source. Files exist for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, across 16 release versions, 1.21 – 26.2.

Key features

  1. Surface lava lakes removed

New worlds generate without lava lakes on the surface, so forests and open land keep their look.

  2. Lava flooding limited

Lava that would spill out around mountains is held back during generation.

  3. Underground lava preserved

Lava lakes underground still generate, so the Nether portal lava connection keeps working.

  4. Mod or data pack

Servers can run the change as a mod or as a data pack, and both come from the same version 1.1 file.

Questions

Does No Surface Lava need to be installed on the client?

No. Only the server must run the mod for surface lava lakes to stop generating, so players may leave it out.

Can No Surface Lava be used as a data pack instead of a mod?

Yes. Version 1.1 ships both options in one file, and the data pack supports the 1.21.x releases.

Why does the data pack show an error when loading Minecraft 26.x?

The author notes that the error message does not affect the data pack's function, so the change still applies on 26.x builds.

What the author says

I created this as these lava lakes have annoyed me for so long, and has destroyed so much beautiful nature in my worlds. And the lava setting fire to a forest for instance, can cause lag and stutters, especially if hosting a world for multiple people. So if you're tired of the same thing happening in your worlds…
