Nexus Characters - Cross-World Progression

by t0mpseN

Nexus Characters lets a player keep separate characters that carry their inventory, stats and identity from one world to another.

FabricClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.20.1 – 1.21.11

What it does

Each character is bound to the player instead of to a single world. Progress made with a character, including its inventory, stats and identity, moves with it when it is used in another single-player save or on a multiplayer server. Players can create a new character for a different playthrough and keep the older characters intact.

The mod works in single-player and multiplayer, and it needs to be installed on the server as well as on each client, since the environment is client and server. Fabric is the only loader with files, and the latest one, 1.4.1, targets 1.20.6. Files cover 1.20.1 – 1.21.11 across 17 release versions, and the code is released under the MIT License as open source.

Key features

  1. Character creation

Players create characters that serve as separate identities for different playthroughs, each with its own playstyle.

  2. Cross-world progression

Inventory, stats and other character data carry over when the character enters another world, including single-player saves and servers.

  3. Hardcore characters

Hardcore characters can be created for players who want a permanent run, since losing one does not affect the character's other worlds.

  4. Compatibility with other mods

External progression, such as a Cobblemon party or PC boxes, can be saved directly to the character and follow it across dimensions and worlds.

Use cases

Exploring many worlds

A player who builds in many worlds can explore new ones without starting over, because the character keeps its gear and experience.

Multiplayer servers

Server owners can let players take characters online, so progress made in single-player is not lost when joining a server.

Who it’s for: Players who switch between worlds often, server owners who want portable progress, and players who enjoy hardcore runs without losing a world they spent hours building.

Questions

Does Nexus Characters need to be installed on the server?

Yes. The server and every player need the mod installed.

Which loader does Nexus Characters use?

Fabric is the only loader with published files. The latest Fabric file, 1.4.1, targets 1.20.6.

Does Nexus Characters save vanilla world data?

No. The mod does not save vanilla data; it stores the character's own progress, so the world itself is not copied.
