More Fossils
by badooga
More Fossils raises the number of fossils found in the Overworld by letting them generate in any biome, with the largest gains in deep dark caves.
What it does
Vanilla fossils appear only in a few desert, swamp and mangrove swamp biomes, so most players seldom meet one. The mod adds them to every Overworld biome through biome modifiers. The new spawns are uncommon, but exploring large cave systems gives a fair chance of finding some. Since the changes build on vanilla generation, fossils turn up well above average in deserts, swamps and mangrove swamps, and far more often in the deep dark.
The mod is a data pack and works through Fabric and Forge biome modifiers. The server must run it, while clients may leave it out. Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, and the latest builds target 26.1.2. The project is open source under the MIT License.
Key features
Fossils in every Overworld biome
Fossils can generate in any Overworld biome, not only the desert, swamp and mangrove swamp biomes.
Boosted deep dark spawns
Deep dark areas hold noticeably more fossils than other biomes, making that environment a stronger place to dig.
Rarity set in data files
Generation frequency is controlled by the rarity filter in the placed feature JSON, so the odds can be changed in a custom data pack.
Editable biome tags
The biome tag files decide which biomes can hold fossils, letting a server owner narrow or widen the list.

Use cases
Fossil hunting in caves
Players searching large cave systems can find fossils in biomes where vanilla would never place them.
Who it’s for: Survival players who want fossils to be easier to find, and server owners who prefer to adjust world generation through data pack files.
How it compares
No More Swamp Huts is server-side only and covers 1.18.2 – 1.21.1 on all four loaders, but it changes swamp huts rather than fossils. Its license is the MIT License. Fossil Mod is a Fabric mod for 1.16.4 that players and servers both run, released under CC0 1.0 Universal and not open source.

What the author says
Have you ever wondered why fossils are so rare? Turns out, they only generate rarely in desert, swamp, and mangrove swamp biomes. Most players won't ever encounter one throughout their playthroughs. This datapack uses Fabric/Forge biome modifiers to allow fossils to generate in any Overworld biome. They aren't too…
