mc-truststore (Let's Encrypt & Sessionserver fix)

by juanmuscaria

mc-truststore makes older Java and Minecraft installs trust Let's Encrypt and DigiCert certificates, fixing failed authentication and mod requests.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltClient or server, optionalAll rights reserved1.6.4 – 1.21.11

What it does

mc-truststore loads a newer Java cacerts keystore alongside the copy that ships with an older Java runtime. Some Java installs are missing the roots used by Let's Encrypt and DigiCert, so requests to those servers fail. The mod merges the newer keystore into the default SSL context, letting the game and installed mods reach servers that use these certificate authorities.

The mod is aimed at launchers and game setups running ancient Java versions, where the bundled certificate list is outdated. It has no effect on current setups. Loader support is broad: Fabric Loader, Forge through LaunchWrapper for 1.6.4 – 1.12.2, and NeoForge through ModLauncher for 1.13.2 onward. Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, with the latest build covering 1.21.11.

Because it changes trust settings for every outgoing HTTPS connection, the author advises installing it only when a specific problem calls for it, not as a general addition.

Key features

  1. Newer keystore loading

Loads a newer Java cacerts keystore next to the one bundled with the runtime, keeping both sets of trusted roots.

  2. Default SSL context merge

Injects a custom TrustManager into the default SSLContext that merges the existing trust list with the new one.

  3. Let's Encrypt and DigiCert support

Lets mods and game services reach servers secured by Let's Encrypt and DigiCert certificate authorities.

  4. Session authentication fix

Addresses cases where the game cannot authenticate with Mojang services on older Java versions.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Players and server owners on older Java versions, or using mods that fail to contact services secured by Let's Encrypt or DigiCert. Because the mod alters trust settings for all HTTPS traffic, the author says it should only be installed when a problem calls for it.

Questions

Does mc-truststore need a specific loader?

No. Files exist for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, and the latest build for each covers 1.21.11. Older Forge versions use LaunchWrapper, and NeoForge uses ModLauncher.

Should every player install mc-truststore?

No. Either side can run it, and neither needs it, so players and servers install it only when a specific problem requires it, as the author advises.

Which versions does mc-truststore support?

Builds cover 1.6.4 – 1.21.11 across 80 release versions, with 1.0 for 1.21.11 as the latest file.

What the author says

The mod will attempt to inject a custom TrustManager in the default SSLContext that merges the default TrustManager and a new TrustManager using the keystore from newer java versions. If the mod loads successfully it should now be possible to request URLs from servers using Let's Encrypt and DigiCert as their CA…
