Map4Image

by flopingbird

Map4Image converts pictures from web links into Minecraft map art, placing the finished maps automatically in item frames on NeoForge servers.

What it does

A player supplies a link that points straight to an image file ending in an extension such as .png, wrapped in quotation marks, and the mod converts the picture into map art. The source, dither type and width and height can be chosen. Floyd-Steinberg dithering is recommended for the most consistent look, and it is a good first setting to try.

Each generated map covers 128x128 pixels, so larger pictures become a grid of maps. A super map is produced when the chosen width or height goes above 128 pixels, and it can be placed and broken across item frames automatically. A valid setup needs the super map's top-left grid item placed in a frame, with enough frames tall and wide enough to hold the full image; a 300x500 image, for example, needs several frames across and down.

Map4Image needs NeoForge and runs server-side only, so only the server requires it while vanilla clients join without installing anything. It is open source under the MIT License, and its source code and issue tracker are public. Files are published for NeoForge on 1.20.5 – 1.21.5, with 0.2.1 for 1.21.5 as the latest file, first published on 2025-05-03 and last updated on 2026-04-04.

Key features

  1. Link-based image import

Pictures are read from a direct image link, so no file has to be uploaded to the server first.

  2. Automatic map art placement

Large map art is placed and broken in item frames automatically, saving the work of setting up each map by hand.

  3. Adjustable output

The source, dither type and the width and height of the result can all be set before the image is generated.

  4. Super map generation

Images larger than one map are generated as a super map that spans several 128x128 maps in a grid.

How it compares

Xaero Train Map is a client-side only NeoForge mod under the MIT License, so it is a different kind of tool rather than a server-side image importer. Map Tooltip is client-side only and open source under the MIT License, covering Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 1.12.2 – 26.1.2. JUST SHOW ME MY MAP! is also client-side only and open source, with a wider range of loaders and game versions 1.9 – 26.3.

Questions

Does Map4Image need to be installed on player clients?

No. Players join without it, since only the server has to run the mod.

Which dither type should be used first?

Floyd-Steinberg dithering is recommended because it tends to give the most consistent results for the look of the image.

How many item frames does a large image need?

It depends on the size. One full map covers 128 pixels in each direction, so a 300x500 image requires several frames across and down.

What the author says

Map4Image is a NeoForge mod that allows you to convert images through links into minecraft map art. This mod was heavily inspired by Image2Map and serves as a NeoForge alternative to Image2Map. Currently the mod is in very early development and does not have the same level of features or polish Image2Map does. This…
