lwjgl3ify

by eigenraven

lwjgl3ify lets Minecraft 1.7.10 run on LWJGL3 and modern Java versions, through a Forge-loaded patch set for the old game.

ForgeClient or server, optionalGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.7.10

What it does

Once installed, the mod switches the game from the original LWJGL2 libraries to LWJGL3, so 1.7.10 can start on Java 17 and newer. It bundles the libraries it needs, including ASM 9 and recent Apache Commons, and rewrites the class path the relauncher loads so those versions take effect. Dummy org/lwjgl classes stand in for the removed ones, and display mods are still found under their usual location on the class path.

A startup window appears and asks the player to pick a modern Java installation to relaunch with the required JVM settings. Java 17 and 21 are listed as the recommended versions, and the window can also offer a preferred vendor build. Mixin metadata, several ASM transformers and a shaded jakarta.xml.bind are included, because the bind API was removed from the JRE in Java 11. The mod depends on UniMixins and is licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, which makes it open source.

Key features

  1. LWJGL3 on 1.7.10

The game runs on the LWJGL3 libraries in place of the original LWJGL2 setup, which the old build cannot use on modern Java.

  2. Modern Java relaunch

A startup prompt lets the player choose a Java 17 or newer installation and relaunches the game with its JVM settings.

  3. Bundled transformers

ASM transformers handle package renaming and a shaded jakarta.xml.bind, so the rest of the game code works on the new libraries.

  4. Early load plugin system

RetroFuturaBootstrap is bundled as an early load plugin system that the patches use during startup.

Use cases

Playing 1.7.10 on a current Java

Players who want the old version on a supported Java release install the mod in the Forge profile and pick a modern runtime at launch.

Running a server on modern Java

Server owners can add the mod alongside a custom launcher jar so the dedicated server starts on the same Java versions.

Who it’s for: Players and server owners who keep Minecraft 1.7.10 on Forge and need it to run on Java 17 or newer. The mod is for the 1.7.10 line only, and it adds nothing to later game versions.

Questions

Does lwjgl3ify need UniMixins?

Yes. UniMixins is a required dependency and has to be installed alongside lwjgl3ify on Forge for 1.7.10.

Does lwjgl3ify have to be installed on the server?

No. It works on a client, a server or both, and installing it on one side is enough for that side to use the LWJGL3 libraries.

Which Java versions does lwjgl3ify support?

The startup window asks for a modern Java installation to relaunch with. Java 17 and Java 21 are listed as the recommended versions, and older Java 8 installs can still start the launcher first.

What the author says

Brings LWJGL3 and modern Java versions to Minecraft 1.7.10. Bundles RetroFuturaBootstrap as a flexible early load plugin system. To use, just make sure the main jar is in the mods/ directory and configure to launch with Java 8 as usual. On startup, a window should appear prompting you to select a modern Java version…
