Iris & Oculus Flywheel Compat

by leon-o

With Iris and Oculus shaderpacks enabled, Iris & Oculus Flywheel Compat keeps GPU instancing active for Create's entities, which the rendering library otherwise switches off.

What it does

The rendering library turns off its optimizations whenever a shaderpack is enabled, because its own shader stops working under Iris or Oculus. This mod forces those optimizations back on. It merges the library's shader into the shaderpack's shader so that entities can still be drawn with instancing. The mod requires Iris Shaders, Oculus and Sodium, and Create is an optional dependency. Create Deep Seas also requires this mod.

Instancing helps most when many identical entities are drawn at once, such as the gears in Create. The gain depends on the GPU: the more capable the graphics card, the larger the frame-rate difference, because the original method is limited by a heavy CPU bottleneck when entity counts are high. With no shaderpack enabled, the mod does nothing, since the optimizations already run by default.

The mod is published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 14 release versions, 1.18.2 – 1.21.1, and is open source under the CC0 1.0 Universal license. Players add it to their own game, and a server needs no copy. The source code and issue tracker are public.

Key features

  1. Instanced Create entities

Entities from Create are drawn with instancing while a shaderpack is enabled.

  2. Most shaderpacks without patching

Most shaderpacks work without patching, and shaderpacks that are not on the tested list may also work.

  3. Merged shader pipeline

The rendering library's shader is combined with the active shaderpack's shader automatically, with no manual setup.

Use cases

Large Create builds

Factories with many rotating gears or belts are the case where instancing gives the biggest gain under a shaderpack.

Who it’s for: Players who run Create with Iris or Oculus shaderpacks and want instancing to stay on, as well as modpack authors who include both.

Questions

Does Iris & Oculus Flywheel Compat need Sodium?

Yes. Sodium is a required dependency, next to Iris Shaders, Oculus and this mod.

Does the server need Iris & Oculus Flywheel Compat installed?

No. Servers do not need it; each player installs it for their own game.

Why does the frame-rate gain vary between players?

The gain depends on the GPU, because the original rendering method is limited by the CPU when many entities are drawn.
