Hbs Satellites

by holy_buckets

Hbs Satellites lets a player place a satellite block anywhere in the world and view distant terrain through display blocks, with a 3D semi-holographic map.

What it does

A satellite block can be placed anywhere and streams a live feed to controller display blocks, so a player can watch a remote stretch of land without travelling there. Across the surface, the land is rendered as a semi-holographic three-dimensional diorama that players can move through and keep watch over. Hostile and friendly entities show up as pings on the feed, and the viewing area, depth and height can be adjusted with controller blocks. A target controller block emits a redstone signal when it is fired on, and a redstone torch can set a waypoint that a target receiver uses as the location.

Several displays can be attached to one satellite, so a single feed can be shown in more than one place. Satellite upgrades are craftable and extend what a satellite can show. Ping behaviour for entities is set in a customizable config file. The mod requires Balm and HB's Foundation, and Hbs Satellites Compatability Mod depends on it.

The mod runs on client and server. Builds exist for 1.20.1 and 1.21.1 on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, and the code is open source under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Live satellite feed

A satellite block streams a feed to any connected controller display block placed elsewhere.

  2. 3D terrain diorama

Distant land is rendered as a semi-holographic 3D map that players can explore and monitor.

  3. Entity pings

Mobs and passive creatures show up as blips on the satellite feed, and a config file controls how those markers look.

  4. Target and waypoint system

A redstone torch sets a waypoint, and a target controller emits a redstone signal when its target is fired on.

Use cases

Watching a base from afar

Players place a satellite at a base and show its feed on a display in a safer spot, keeping an eye on it while away.

Redstone-driven targeting

Builders connect target controllers and receivers to redstone circuits that react to firing events.

Who it’s for: Players who want to monitor distant areas of their world, and server owners who want satellite displays available to everyone on a multiplayer server.
