Happy Ghast Scaffolding

by cristata

Happy Ghast Scaffolding lets a player riding a happy ghast place blocks in the air around the mount through a datapack.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltServer required, client optionalApache License 2.01.21.6 – 1.21.8

What it does

Once a player right-clicks empty space, the happy ghast the player rides places a block from the mainhand or offhand at that spot. Because a happy ghast spans exactly four blocks across, the area it covers holds a grid of 16 positions, and the player moves to line up with that grid before placing. In survival and adventure modes, placed blocks are taken from the inventory; in creative mode the inventory is left unchanged.

The datapack matches items to blocks by ID, so it works with both vanilla and modded blocks as long as the item ID and block ID are the same. Items whose ID differs from the block they produce do not place that block; a water bucket, for example, does not place water because its item ID is minecraft:water_bucket rather than minecraft:water. Placing sounds do not match the block type. The author recommends using the hgs:toggle function to disable the scaffolding sounds.

The mod is distributed as a datapack for worlds, so it needs no mod loader to run. It can be added to a pre-existing world or a new world, and it is removed by uninstalling the mod or datapack. The mod is released under the Apache License 2.0 and is not open source. Files exist for 1.21.6, 1.21.7 and 1.21.8 across Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt.

Key features

  1. Block placement from a happy ghast

A rider right-clicks empty space and the happy ghast places a block there from the mainhand or offhand.

  2. Four-block grid

The happy ghast is four blocks across, so 16 positions are available, and the player lines up with the grid before placing.

  3. Vanilla and modded blocks

Blocks from other mods can be placed as long as the item ID and block ID match.

  4. Sound toggle

Placing sounds do not match the block placed, so the hgs:toggle function can switch the scaffolding sounds off.

Questions

Does Happy Ghast Scaffolding need a mod loader?

No. It is a datapack, so it is added to a world through the Data Packs menu and does not need Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or Quilt.

Can a modded block be placed with the datapack?

Yes, if the item ID and the block ID match. An item whose ID differs from its block, such as a water bucket, will not place that block.

Which game versions does the datapack support?

Files exist for 1.21.6, 1.21.7 and 1.21.8, and the latest file is 1.0.0 for 1.21.8.

What the author says

If a happy ghast has a player standing on their back, they will move to align themself with the coordinate grid. Once they do, right click an empty space next to the ghast in order to place a block from either your mainhand or your offhand. Since happy ghasts are exactly 4 blocks across, there's a total of 16 spaces…
