featherIME

by Block1215

featherIME lets players type Japanese, Korean and Chinese text in Minecraft's chat and search boxes through an input method editor, and it works alongside Feather Client.

FabricClient-side onlyCustom license1.19.3 – 1.21.11

What it does

Input method editors compose characters before they are committed to a text field. featherIME shows that composition text underlined directly inside the field, so players can see the candidate characters as they type instead of typing blind until the commit. A field check runs before each commit, and the same handling applies to chat, search boxes and other text input in the game.

The mod is a derivative work that rebuilds caramelChat for Feather Client with a few additional fixes. It bundles the native libraries CocoaInput-lib and MMPL J to talk to the operating system's input methods. Since caramelChat is incompatible with Feather Client, featherIME serves players who want IME input inside that client. Its source code is available, and full attribution is listed in CREDITS.md, which covers caramelChat by LemonCaramel under the LGPL-3.0-or-later license.

Installation is limited to the Fabric loader. featherIME is client-side only, so the server does not need it and players join servers without installing anything. The mod is published for 16 release versions, 1.19.3 – 1.21.11, under a custom license that is not open source.

Key features

  1. Composition text inside the field

Characters being composed appear underlined right inside the text field, so the current input stays visible.

  2. Japanese, Korean and Chinese input

Text in these languages can be typed directly into chat, search boxes and other fields that accept text.

  3. Field check before commit

A check runs before a composed string is committed, which keeps the text field consistent with the input.

  4. Bundled native input libraries

CocoaInput-lib and MMPL J are bundled to access the system input method from the game.

How it compares

Full comparison

Tnze's IME MOD is client-side only and open source under the MIT License, with a Fabric file for 1.21.11. NeoCocoa targets Fabric and NeoForge for 1.20.1 – 1.21.11 under a custom license that is not open source, so it covers NeoForge where featherIME does not. Outer Glow Feather & Lunar is client-side only under the MIT License for 1.20 – 1.21.1 and is not open source.

Questions

Does featherIME need to be installed on the server?

No. It is installed on the player's side alone, so servers need nothing.

Which loader does featherIME support?

The mod is published for Fabric only, so it cannot be installed with Forge or NeoForge.

Can featherIME be used with caramelChat?

No. caramelChat cannot be used together with Feather Client, and featherIME is the derivative built for Feather Client.
