FailSafeBlocks

by MidnightTale

FailSafeBlocks swaps in colored placeholder blocks when a world loads with blocks from mods that are no longer installed.

NeoForgeClient and serverGNU General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.21.1

What it does

When a chunk loads and finds block IDs that no installed mod provides, FailSafeBlocks replaces each one with a placeholder block instead of leaving a gap. The mod ships 128 differently colored placeholders, so separate missing blocks can be told apart at a glance. Each missing block ID is mapped to the same placeholder every time, which keeps the mapping stable across sessions.

Placeholder blocks can be broken like ordinary blocks, which makes it possible to clear out a damaged area. The mod is aimed at worlds that contain modded content, where an uninstalled mod would otherwise leave holes in terrain and structures. It is a NeoForge mod for Minecraft 1.21.1, and it runs on client and server, so both the server and every player need it. FailSafeBlocks is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, with a public source repository and issue tracker.

Key features

  1. Placeholder replacement

Unknown block IDs found while loading chunks are swapped for placeholder blocks automatically.

  2. 128 colored placeholders

The placeholder set has 128 colors, so different missing blocks stay visually distinct in the world.

  3. Stable block mapping

A given missing block ID always maps to the same placeholder, so the result does not change from one load to the next.

  4. Breakable placeholders

Placeholder blocks can be broken like normal blocks, letting players remove leftover damage from uninstalled mods.

Use cases

Recovering a world after removing mods

A world built with mods that were later uninstalled loads with colored markers where those blocks used to be, instead of holes.

Finding where missing blocks were

Each placeholder color identifies a specific missing block, which helps locate the spots that need rebuilding.

Who it’s for: Players who uninstall mods from an existing world, and server owners who need to keep a modded world loading without errors.
