Ever Changing

by magicquartz

Ever Changing lets a Fabric client update the server address shown on the multiplayer screen from a GitHub gist, so a server owner can change IP without players editing their lists.

FabricClient-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.20.1 – 1.21.1

What it does

The mod works with a server-side Ngrok tunnel, which the server owner sets up with the Engrok mod. The tunnel's address is written into a GitHub gist, and the client reads it from there when the multiplayer screen loads. Because the client does the lookup, nothing has to be installed on the server for the address to refresh.

A player pastes the gist URL into Ever Changing, which accepts the main page address, the API address or a raw link. The mod then pulls the current IP each time the server list is opened, and the gist can be updated automatically by the Engrok mod. The client is required, and Fabric API must be installed beside it.

Ever Changing is released under the MIT License and is open source, with the source code publicly available. It has been published for Fabric only, across five game versions, 1.20.1, 1.20.2, 1.20.3, 1.20.4 and 1.21.1. The latest file, 1.0-1.21.1, targets 1.21.1 and was released on 2024-09-21.

Key features

  1. Gist-based address lookup

The client fetches a server IP from a GitHub gist instead of relying on a fixed address in the server list.

  2. Multiple URL formats

A gist can be entered as its main page, its API address or a raw link, and the mod converts it to the form it needs.

  3. Automatic address refresh

The address is pulled when the multiplayer screen opens, so an IP change made by the server side is picked up on the next visit.

  4. Engrok tunnel support

The mod is built to match a server that exposes an Ngrok tunnel through the companion Engrok mod, which keeps the gist current.

Questions

Does Ever Changing need to be installed on the server?

No. Only the player's game needs it, and servers run without it. The server side uses the Engrok mod to keep the gist updated.

Which Fabric API version is needed?

Fabric API is a required dependency. It must be installed next to Ever Changing on Fabric for 1.21.1 or any of the other supported versions.

Which URL format should be pasted into the mod?

The gist can be entered as its main page, its API address or a raw link. The raw form is the one the mod reads most directly.

Does the mod work with a regular server IP?

Yes. Servers without a gist still connect through the normal multiplayer screen, with the address typed in by the player.

What the author says

Ever Changing lets you paste the URL of a GitHub gist (compatible with the Engrok mod) instead of a regular server IP in the multiplayer screen, and it pulls the ip from that gist every time you start an Ngrok tunnel, which conveniently can be automatically updated using the Engrok mod!
