Cull Clouds
by ugamii
With Cull Clouds installed, the vanilla cloud layer skips building geometry for cloud parts the player cannot see, which the mod's description presents as a way to raise frame rate.
What it does
Cull Clouds rewrites how the vanilla cloud layer is built, so parts outside the view are not rendered. It works only with the Fancy cloud setting; with the cloud setting on Fast or Off, nothing changes. Client-side only: players install it, and servers do not need it.
The author reports that the gain is small, often about one frame per second in ordinary play, and larger only on flat worlds where the cloud layer covers more of the view. Because the mod replaces the vanilla cloud code, other mods that change clouds can conflict with it. The author tested it with Extended Clouds, which does not run alongside it, and with one other cloud mod, where Cull Clouds does nothing.
Cull Clouds is published for Fabric and Quilt, with files covering game versions 1.17 – 1.19.2. The latest files, 0.1.1 for 1.18.2, date from 2022-11-08. The mod is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and snapshot builds are published.
Key features
Culls hidden cloud parts
Cloud geometry outside the visible area is not built, reducing the work the client does each frame.
Fancy clouds only
The optimization applies only when the Fancy cloud option is selected in video settings.
Replaces vanilla cloud building
The cloud layer is rebuilt by the mod rather than patched lightly, which is why conflicts are possible.
Frame rate gain
The author reports about one frame per second in normal play, with larger differences on flat worlds.

Use cases
Flat world play
On flat worlds the cloud layer fills more of the view, so the culling has the most effect there.
Clients using Fancy clouds
Players who keep Fancy clouds enabled and want the cloud work reduced can add the mod to a Fabric or Quilt client.
Who it’s for: Players on Fabric or Quilt who keep the Fancy cloud setting and want to reduce cloud rendering work, and who have no other mod that changes clouds.
