CubicChunks

by niko.sk2x

CubicChunks changes Minecraft's world limits so that chunks are stacked vertically, letting a world extend far above and below the usual height range.

ForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.10.2 – 1.12.2

What it does

Standard worlds are split into chunks only horizontally, which caps build height and depth. CubicChunks divides the world into cubes and loads them dynamically as sections, so the vertical extent is close to unlimited, while horizontal limits stay as they are in vanilla. Installing it on a server and on every player's client is what keeps the world consistent.

The mod is Forge-only and covers game versions 1.10.2, 1.11.2 and 1.12.2. Forge 14.23.5.2860 is the build recommended for 1.12.2, and the latest file, 1.12.2-0.0.1301.0, dates from 2026-10-01. The code is open source under the MIT License, and the source code and issue tracker are public.

The author warns that worlds with cubic chunks may fail on load for newly generated worlds, and that a world needs saving and reloading after its first run. Compatibility is mixed: the author suggests CubicWorldGen when modded world generation is not needed, notes that some mods need heavy testing, and lists reports from others. Several mods depend on it, including CubicChunksCompatibilityHelper and DimensionalLayers.

Key features

  1. Near-unlimited world height

Vertical sections load on demand, so a world can extend well beyond the standard 0 to 256 height range.

  2. Cubic chunk storage

Chunks are stored as cubes in the horizontal and vertical directions, which is the basis of the expanded world size.

  3. Compatibility reports

The author keeps a list of existing compatibility reports, and players can submit their own findings.

  4. Save and reload behaviour

A known bug affects newly generated worlds, and a save and reload cycle is part of the documented workaround.

Questions

Does CubicChunks need to be installed on the server and client?

Yes. A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too.

Which Minecraft version should be used with CubicChunks?

Version 1.12.2 is the recommended target. Files exist for 1.10.2, 1.11.2 and 1.12.2, but the author advises against 1.11.2 unless the risks are understood.

Do other mods need CubicChunks to run?

Yes. Three catalog mods require it, including CubicChunksCompatibilityHelper and DimensionalLayers, so those need it installed too.

In the catalog

CubicChunks is one of 7,555 Cursed mods on ModsFinder, and one of 3,426 Cursed mods for Forge. 2,920 mods support Minecraft 1.12.2.

What the author says

This mod allows for (almost) unlimited world height and depth, by dynamically loading vertical sections of the world, just like Minecraft does in horizontal direction. A: This is normal for compatibility generator (default). This is the cost of good mod compatibility. This is planned to change. Currently you can use…
